First WEEK Complete

We finished the first week. Whew - it got kind of crazy, too! Nick & I are trying to get it together so we can walk in the mornings - he LOVES riding in the stroller as we go.

Monday: when I picked Jake up, he said he had a good time but informed me he was not going back. We had to visit Daddy at work (Mommy is planning a dinner at a restaurant for us and about 40 soldiers - no kids - and needed to get a decision). Jake informed Mr. David that he liked school and would go back tomorrow.

Tuesday: I picked him up and he was dejected and a little peeved that he was not eating lunch at school. When I heard the administrators telling me the pick up times, I assumed that meant only hot lunch. (This IS my first adventure sending MY kids to school). It occured to me as soon as he said that, that I could PACK his lunch. So, after snooze we went (BACK) to Walmart to pick out a lunch box - Buzz & Woody - and a thermos - Spiderman.

Wednesday: We get to school to find out I can no longer walk him down the hall to his class. I'm not sure what brilliant person thought that 4 year olds only needed 2 days to adjust when it's their first time in school...I signed in and walked him, trying to coach him all the way down. He was a happy camper when I picked him up AFTER lunch.

Thursday: He tried to tell me he can walk to his class by himself. So, I didn't sign in, just stood at the door - he turned the wrong way. So, I had to direct him. Again, after school, he was happy to have eaten lunch at school!

Friday: I had to walk him to his class - he apparently lost his confidence in getting himself to class. But...had a great day, came home with a stamp for good behavior (as he had all the other days) and glad to eat lunch at school.

His eating lunch at school gives Nick and me 30 extra minutes before we pick him up.

We're glad he's enjoying it. Nick is still a work in progress since he needs to be completely potty trained before he can go. So for now, he revels in the fact that he can watch what HE wants on TV and can play with all the toys with no one trying to take them away.

First Day Complete

In case we don't get a chance to tell everyone personally, here is a recap of the day.

We dropped Jake off and he was a complete champ. He settled right down. We finally figured out the routine - we drop Jake off to line up outside his classroom at about 7:55. Then Nick & I go home - we picked up a single jogger stroller (having sold our double at the yard sale in KS this spring) - and we're going to start walking in the mornings while Jake is at school. And probably make commissary runs, too - it is significantly easier with one of them than with both of them.

Then we go back and wait in the lobby until Jake comes out with his class at about 10:55. Then it's home for lunch and snooze.

When I picked Jake up this morning, he said he had a good time but he wasn't going back tomorrow. I couldn't get much in the way of reasoning out of him, so we'll see, I guess, what happens. We did tell him that he will, in fact, be going to school tomorrow and the next day. He was pretty disappointed that he didn't get to use all the school supplies this over-zealous Mom bought. It's hard to explain to a little person that there won't be much done in 2.5 hours a day!

1st Day of Pre-K

Today was Jake’s first day of PreK at Bliss Elementary (part of the El Paso Independent School District). He has been very excited about this – it’s about 3 hours a day. Wouldn’t ya know, that I had to WAKE him up, even though it was after the 630 am he’s been getting me up since we got here. I believe we’ll all be taking a snooze today!

Jake got dressed and was excited to be wearing his uniform with a BELT! Not sure how the Belt will work with that cast…so we’ll see!

And Nick had to be in the pictures, as well! As I write this blog post, he’s watching Fireman Sam – uninterrupted. He’ll probably enjoy his 2.5 hours of peace at home every morning. We’re going to start walking too – I just knew this am would be a little nutty.

Can’t wait to hear how the first day was!

A Lot of Excitement

There has been a lot of excitement here at the Savoie House. More than the usual with these two…

On Thursday, we met some friends at the play ground down the street. The kids were having a great time and I caught sight of Jake crossing the Monkey Bars…all by himself for the first time. Attempting to be the good Mom – I didn’t say a word, but silently cheered him on. He got behind the slide and dropped. The next thing I heard was a horrible scream. Jake has a pretty good flare for the dramatic so we always have to evaluate things – like bumping his head will often elicit cries as if his head has been severed.

It didn’t look swollen or disfigured, but then it did, then it didn’t. So I called my good friend and boy expert – her advice was to wait until the next day. We headed home for lunch and Jake informed me that chicken fries and a snooze would make it better. For Friday, it appeared that it did make it better. It was still sore if he tried to push off on the floor or if we touched over the bones – still no obvious swelling. Saturday, I was getting more concerned and then he flipped himself out of the rocking chair – landing on the same sore arm.

After snooze on Saturday, I was tired of obsessing about it and wondering – and listening to the Mom voice so I took him to the ER. Of course, he bounced around like a loon and the triage nurse looked as if he questioned my sanity. He even went so far as to say “I don’t think there is anything wrong with it but we’ll get in an x-ray”

I work hard at not being a panicked mom. So, if I bring him in, I think there is something that someone with a little more knowledge needs to address.

Off to X-ray – and Jake was a champ. Perfect patient and entertaining all who attended us. During the long spells of waiting – he colored and talked…A LOT!

We get to the quick care side and the PA informs us that there is an incomplete fracture. (I researched that – it’s the NEW name for a greenstick fracture. It didn’t go all the way through the bone.) PA Tim says, I think we can splint it, we’ll see what Ortho says. Ortho comes and said – nah, we should cast. If I put a splint on a 4 year old, he’ll take it off. It was as if he’s met Jake before.

Off we go for the cast – a dinosaur cast. Again…as if Ortho has met Jake. Jake was a champ for that too, doing exactly as directed. After the cast and the 2nd set of x-rays, Jake tells me he’s done with the cast and tries to force it off. Sorry buddy – THREE weeks!

He’s pretty good with the cast – we have to remind him to be careful not to get Nick with it. We think he’ll live! J

Cat in the Hat

Jake & Nick have a new interest in Dr. Seuss books – and they enjoy The Cat in the Hat. We’ve been watching a lot of PBS and there was an opportunity to meet The Cat in the Hat at the local minor league baseball game. The boys really enjoyed meeting him – and maybe Daddy did, too!
