Hypospadias

The definition of hypospadias according to the Mayo Clinic is a condition in which the opening of the urethra is on the underside of the penis, instead of at the tip. The urethra is the tube through which urine drains from your bladder and exits your body. Nick was diagnosed with hypospadias at birth. His is luckily, a very mild case. He was also born with a bend in the same area that needs to be repaired. He will be having his surgery on May 4, 2009.

Some of you may go and do research on the internet. While I’m certainly no expert in this, I do know that Nick has a very mild case and it’s not associated with any of the extreme cases that you may read about. He is ALL boy – there is no question. It is classified as a birth defect – were it not for the bend, I probably would be thinking even harder on the surgery. I had wanted to get this done several mos ago when he was much younger. As luck would have it, while we are close to a fantastic Children’s Hospital here, there is ONE pediatric urologist to perform the surgery and he was booked up for a year. This has been scheduled since the end of LAST April.

He is a happy, healthy toddler. His hypospadias doesn’t affect him at all. I hope when we’re finished with this, he has NO memory of it! We’ll keep you all posted!
